Refined Carrageenan is first dissolved and filtered to remove cell wall debris.  This is then precipitated from the clear solution either by Isopropanol or by Potassium chloride.

Carrageenan, when works together with konjac gum, locust bean gum, xanthan gum, can play a desired synergistic effect in processed food products.

It is widely used in food industry as coagulant, thickener, suspension agent, stabilizer and water-holding agent.
